This group was established at the School of Medicine-Univeersidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia, and registered before the National Research Council (COLCIENCIAS) in 2004. The lab is equipped to develop research in molecular biology, cellular biology, humoral and cellular responses. The main topic of research is the immune response on infectious diseases, using Chagas disease as a model. In this research line, it is evaluated the immune response against the Trypanosoma cruzi KMP-11 protein. In this parasite protein we look for the presence of B and T cell epitopes and how they are recognized during the different clinical stages of the disease. For neuroimmunology studies, we use human astrocytes as a model for liposome uptake with vesicles containing myelin-derived lipids; and as a host cell of Trypanosoma cruzi. The cooperative work is done with the Parasitology Group of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and Neurosciences and Biophysic groups of Universidad de los Andes. Also we study by flow cytometry the phenotypic and functional characteristics of blood cells in several human pathologies.
